Gara is the princess of the water in La Gomera.
During a party she went with her friends to look at each other in the jets of epina. Legend has it that if a young woman was reflected in its waters and they remained calm, she would find love, while if they became cloudy it meant a bad omen. One by one they were reflected and the waters remained calm. But when Gara looked out the water moved.
Then
some nobles arrived from the island of Tenerife, among them was the son of a
mencey, Jonay, prince of fire. When the two young men looked at each other,
they immediately fell in love. When they were going to kiss, the Teide volcano
began to spew lava.
The
rulers of both islands separated the young people to calm the volcano. Everyone
went back to their island, but Jonay kept thinking about Gara, and vice versa.
Jonay, determined, began to swim to reach the island of La Gomera, hidden from
his father. Gara was looking out to sea and was surprised to see Jonay
arriving. When he reached the shore they hugged and the volcano erupted.
Then
the two saw Gara's father walking and Jonay's father arriving by boat. The two
lovers ran out until they reached the highest point of the gomera. There they
saw that they had no escape and decided that, if they could not be
together in life, they would be in the afterlife.
They
took a stick, sharpened it on both sides and placed it between their breasts
and they gave each other a deadly hug. They both died and the volcano calmed
down. Today that site is known as Garajonay.
